How We Research

Updated on

Every guide here starts with one question: will this dishwasher work in the kitchen of the person reading? Counter space, water setup and household size decide that, so we check them first.

Here is how we do it.

1. We start with your kitchen

A dishwasher for a studio apartment, an RV and a family kitchen call for different picks. We ask how much counter you have, whether you can hook up to a faucet and how many dishes you wash.

When your setup limits the choice, we say so up front.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at how the water gets in (a fill-by-hand tank, a faucet hookup or both), the tank size, place settings, wash programs, drying options and what comes in the box.

We also check the footprint and the clearance the maker asks for above the unit. Brands describe their own models in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a dishwasher. We look for patterns, like leaks, error codes, weak drying, noise and how well a model handles hard water.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A model that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Makers change models, and some listings disappear. Similar units often sell under close names, so we check model details and only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any model with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every dishwasher we cover.

A countertop dishwasher uses hot water and electricity. Follow the maker's manual for setup, power and drainage, and ask a licensed plumber or electrician about anything the manual doesn't cover.

We don't promise any dishwasher will sanitize dishes or remove every stain. We label maker claims as the maker's claims.
